about us

Somewhere Queer is an exploration of LGBTQ folks taking pride in the place they live. We're inspired by a need for positive representations of LGBTQ people making the South their home -- a place where LGBTQ folks can live and thrive.

Over the summer of 2018, we traveled to LGBTQ pride celebrations across the South, recording audio interviews and taking photographs of LGBTQ people in Southern communities with a population at or under 40,000. Each place that we visited hosts an annual pride event and has a strong local organizing presence. We worked in collaboration with leaders at each site to identify interviewees and to write accurate stories.

This site includes short audio pieces featuring each of our interviewees, in addition to links to download our full interview audio and transcripts. This project is a collaboration of Monique Laborde and Brennan Lewis, and our work is funded by the UNC Chapel Hill Robertson Scholars Leadership Program and the Duke University John Hope Franklin Student Documentary Award. For more information about our methods, materials, or interviews, feel free to contact us directly.
